Chevrolet introduced the Camaro Z28 SS in late 1999 to regain its grip on the Convertible market. There are 3 trim levels for the Camaro in 2000: Z28 SS and Base. With two doors and spacious seating for four, the rear-wheel drive Camaro makes a statement. There is plenty of competition in the Convertible market, including strong offerings from Nissan.

Standard equipment in the Camaro for 1999 and 2000 includes the 5.7 liter engine by General Motors, weighing in at 8 cylinders and sixteen valves. A 4-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the Chevrolet engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Camaro.

The fuel system for the 2000 Camaro is a traditional SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 16.80 gallons.

The Camaro uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.


The Camaro is 193.50 inches long, 74.10 inches wide, and 51.20 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 101.10 inches. It is able to seat 4 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $21,615 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $19,778. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Convertible.

There is a 36,000 mile, 36 month warranty with this vehicle, including a powertrain warranty of 36,000/36 miles/months. This is normal for this price range.

Fuel Efficiency

The Z28 SS made 25 – 27 miles per gallon highway driving, while dipping to 17 – 18 in the city. This was a respectable number for the model year, but exceeded by several Nissan models available at the time.

Parting Shots

The 1999 model began the promise of the Chevrolet Camaro. The 2000 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chevrolet hopes that the Camaro Z28 SS will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
