The Chevrolet Camaro Base for 1998

Chevrolet Camaro

The 1998 Camaro is an important vehicle to Chevrolet for the convertible market segment. The Base is a member of a series of three trim levels for the Camaro which include Z28 SS and Base. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Chevrolet. There is strong competition from vehicles from Acura.

Chevrolet Camaro Engine Specs

The Camaro Base is equipped with a General Motors 3.8 liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The Buick engine is mated to a General Motors 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.

The Camaro uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Vehicle Statistics

The Camaro is 193.50 inches long, 74.10 inches wide, and 51.30 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 101.10 inches. It is able to seat 4 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $20,470 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $18,730. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 1998 Camaro is a traditional SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 15.50 gallons.

The Base made 25 – 27 miles per gallon highway driving, while dipping to 17 – 18 in the city. This was a respectable number for the model year, but exceeded by several Acura models available at the time.

We Think…

The 1997 model began the promise of the Chevrolet Camaro. The 1998 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chevrolet hopes that the Camaro Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
